This time I will write about how I help my sons with their homework.

When my first son was born, I was having serious doubts about how I would be able to help him when he is at school, since my Spanish is far from perfect (and it was even less perfect 9 years ago). I was afraid that I would not understand his tasks and I wouldn´t be able to help him with them. In the end my sons ended up in a bilingual school (Spanish - English), so I felt partially relieved, since I have a degree of an English teacher, so in the case of the subjects that they study at school in English, I even have an advantage over those Spanish parents that don´t speak English.

At the moment my sons study mathematics and Spanish language and literature in Spanish. As I was expecting it beforehand, to understand mathematical problems sometimes gives me hard times and to explain mathematics in Spanish feels very strange to me. In the end I chose a mixed method: when I have to explain something, I do it in Hungarian and if there are special expressions (e.g raising to a power), I just translate the expression to make sure they understand what am I talking about. In case I feel the need, I try to repeat the explanation as well in Spanish, then again in Hungarian. This way I kill two birds with one stone: while doing his Spanish homework, he learns the Hungarian expressions, too.

Where I really feel that it is too much to mix more languages, is science, which they study at school in English. Our teachers suggested the parents never to translate the material to Spanish, but to try to find time to talk about the topic as well in Spanish separately, so that the kids get to know the vocabulary in Spanish, too. In our case I think it would be way too complicated and time consuming, if I tell the material in Hungarian and their Spanish father in Spanish, too. Of course from time to time I give them tasks like to draw the human skeleton (he likes to draw and does it very well) and to write the words that have to be studied as well in Hungarian (e.g. spine, skull). Unfortunately we don´t have the capacity to do this with all the material they study at school.
In case of English homework we talk about the material in English, tasks like the one above can only come afterwords, separately.

In case of math homework, I would like to mention separately the issue of counting. I myself found it very hard to help my son practice the multiplication tables because I only know them in Hungarian and I was very slow translating the Spanish results of my son to Hungarian and checking them in my head. After a while I have started to get completely messed up with the numbers, so in the end I took a printed version of the multiplication tables and we practiced only in Spanish.
I also observed it on myself that I can only count in my native language. In case of almost any counting exercise I have to do the translation. For this reason I never wanted to force my son to do counting in Hungarian, till the moment when it turned out that he is able to do that, too! It looks like kids can develop this ability as well when growing up in a multilingual environment, while adults cannot handle this with such flexibility even when they use several languages on a daily basis.

What is your method to help your kids with their homework without messing them up with all those languages? To what extent do you manage to get them study the subjects in various languages, transmitting the vocabulary in your native language, too?

Esta vez voy a escribir sobre como ayudo a mis hijos con sus deberes del cole. 

Cuando mi primer hijo nació, tenía dudas sobre como le voy a ayudar cuando vaya a la escuela, como mi español no es perfecto (y aún lo era menos hace 9 años). Tenía miedo de no entender sus tareas y no ser capaz de ayudarle con ellas. Al final mis hijos acabaron en una escuela bilingüe (español - inglés), así que he podido sentirme más calmada por lo menos con la mitad, como tengo el título de profesora de inglés, por lo tanto con las asignaturas enseñadas en inglés hasta tengo ventaja frente a los padres españoles que no hablen inglés. 

Por el momento estudian matemáticas y lengua en español. Como esperaba, entender los problemas matemáticos me causa dificultades a veces, y explicar matemáticas en español me resulta muy extraño. Al final elegí un método mixto: cuando hay que explicar algo, lo hago en húngaro, traduciendo solo las expresiones especiales (por ejemplo al cubo), para asegurarme que entiende bien de lo que estoy hablando. Si lo veo necesario, intento repetir la explicación en español también, y luego otra vez en húngaro. Así mato dos pájaros de un tiro: haciendo los deberes en español también aprende las expresiones húngaras.

Donde tengo la sensación de tener demasiado lío con los idiomas, es la asignatura de ciencias, la que estudian en inglés. La sugerencia de los profesores para los padres era no traducir nunca el material al español, pero que intenten a hablar sobre los temas en español también de manera separada, para que los niños aprendan el vocabulario también en su idioma nativo. Pues esto en nuestro caso ya sería demasiado complicado y llevaría mucho tiempo, que yo diga el material también en húngaro y su padre en español. Por supuesto, de vez en cuando le doy tareas como dibujar el esqueleto humano (le gusta dibujar y dibuja muy bien) y escribir las palabras que tienen que saber en inglés en el cole (por ejemplo: columna vertebral, cráneo). Desgraciadamente no tenemos la capacidad de hacer esto de manera regular y cubriendo todo el material escolar. 
Cuando tienen deberes en inglés, hablamos del material en inglés y les doy las tares de este tipo después, separadas de la parte inglés. 

Quiero mencionar el asunto de hacer cuentas separadamente. Me causaba dificultades cuando tenía que ayudar en la practica de las tablas de multiplicaciones, porque yo solo las sé en húngaro y tardaba mucho en traducir los resultados que me contaba mi hijo y comprobarlos en mi cabeza. Tarde o temprano me liaba totalmente, así que al final tenía que tener una tabla delante de mi y practicamos los multiplicaciones en español.

Llegué a la conclusión que yo sólo puedo contar en mi idioma nativo, porque en caso de cualquier ejercicio de cuentas tengo que hacer el trabajo de la traducción también. Por esta misma razón no quería forzar a mi hijo para que cuente en húngaro, hasta que un día me di cuenta que el si puede hacerlo! Parece que el cerebro de los niños criados en un ambiente multilingüe se entrena para ser capaz de hacer esto también, mientras tanto los adultos no pueden llegar a hacerlo de la misma manera, aunque utilizan más idiomas diariamente. 

¿Que método utilizas cuando ayudas a tus hijos a hacer sus deberes para no liarlos mucho con los diferentes idiomas? ¿Hasta que punto consigues revisar los materiales escolares y transmitir el vocabulario en los diferentes idiomas de la familia?

Ez alkalommal arról fogok írni, hogyan segítek a fiaimnak a házi feladataik elvégzésében.

Amikor az első fiam megszületett, komoly kétségeim voltak afelől, hogyan fogok neki segíteni, amikor majd iskolába megy, hiszen az én spanyolom nem tökéletes (9 évvel ezelőtt pedig még kevésbé volt az). Attól féltem, nem fogom majd megérteni a feladatokat és nem leszek képes segíteni neki. Végül úgy alalkult, hogy kétnyelvű (spanyol - angol) iskolába járnak a fiúk, így félig fellélegezhettem, hiszen van angoltanári diplomám, így azon tantárgyak esetében, amelyeket angolul tanulnak, még előnyöm is van az angolul nem tudó spanyol szülőkkel szemben.

Jelen pillanatban spanyolul a matematikát és a spanyol nyelvet és irodalmat tanulják. Ahogy arra számítottam is, a matekpéldák megértése időnként nehézségeket okoz számomra, azt pedig, hogy spanyolul magyarázzam a matekot, végképp idegennek érzem. Végül vegyes módszert választottam: amikor el kell magyarázni valamit, azt magyarul teszem, az előforduló fontos matematikai kifejezéseket (pl: hatványozás) külön lefordítva nekik, hogy biztosan értsék, miről beszélek. Ha szükségesnek látom, akkor megpróbálom a magyarázatot spanyolul is elismételni, majd ismét magyarul. Igy két legyet ütök egy csapásra: a spanyol házi elvégzése közben magyarul is megtanulják a kifejezéseket.
Ahol viszont már túl soknak érzem a nyelvek keverését, az a környezetismeret, amit angolul tanulnak. A tanárok javaslata az volt, hogy a szülők soha ne fordítsák le a tanulnivalót spanyolra, de próbálják meg spanyolul is elmondani az anyagot külön, hogy megtanulják az anyanyelvükön is a gyerekek az adott szókincset. Na ez nálunk már túlságosan komlikált és időigényes lenne, hogy esetleg én elmondjam magyarul az anyagot, spanyol apukájuk pedig spanyolul. Időnként persze adok olyan feladatokat, hogy pl rajzolja le az emberi csontvázat (szeret rajzolni és jól is rajzol) és írja oda magyarul a szavakat, amelyeket angolul tudniuk kell a suliban (gerinc, koponya stb). Sajnos arra nem futja, hogy ezt rendszeresen és a tananyag teljes egészére kiterjedően csináljuk.
Az angol nyelven írandó és megtanulandó házik esetében pedig angolul beszéljük meg az anyagot, a fenti típusú feladatokat utána, az angolozástól elválasztva adom.

A matek házi esetében külön említést érdemel a számolás. Nagyon nehezen ment nekem a szorzótábla gyakoroltatása, mert én azt csak magyarul tudom és borzasztó lassú volt, mire a fiam spanyol eredményét lefordítottam magamban magyarra és leellenőriztem fejben. Előbb-utóbb el is kezdtem belekavarodni a számokba, így a végén inkább magam elé tettem egy puskát és spanyolul gyakoroltuk a szorzásokat. 
Magamon megfigyelhettem azt, hogy számolni csak és kizárólag magyarul tudok, minden számolási feladat esetében külön időt kell szánnom a fordításra. Emiatt nem is akartam soha azzal gyötörni a fiamat, hogy magyarul számoljon, egészen addig, amíg egyszer kiderült, hogy neki bizony megy ez is! Arra jutottam, hogy a születésüktől fogva többnyelvű gyerekek agya ehhez is könnyebben hozzáedződik, míg a felnőttek ezt később már nem tudják ilyen rugalmasan kezelni még akkor sem, ha napi szinten használnak különböző nyelveket.

Te milyen módszert használsz a házifeladatozás közben, hogy ne zavard össze a gyereket a nyelvi kavalkáddal? Mennyire sikerül a tanyagot több nyelven is gyakoroltatni, a szókincset a saját nyelveden is átadni?
