Writing out Christmas cards / Cartas de Navidad

Not long now before Santa, Nikolaus, Olentxero or the Three Kings come visiting….funny how kids navigate this time of the year. German friends have already had their shoes filled with lollies in early December, Aussie kids are waiting with snow frosted windows in 36 degree heat for Santa, our Basque family are waiting for the Carbon Man, Olentxero and the Spanish kids are waiting for the 3 Kings on 6 January….Christmas can almost go for month if you get the cultural mix right!

I have chosen my top 5 activities for all those clever intercultural kiddies:

1.    Letters to Santa/Olentxero/ Three Kings

We only started this tradition last year and it was interesting to see what they wished for. The little one joined in by cutting out his wishes from the store catalogues.

2.    Cookie baking and sweet treat making

Following a récipe, measuring out the ingredients and time spent together making a variety of cookies made so much sense in a cold Madrid….now the butter and chocolate just melt together making the process just that little bit messier.

3.    Christmas Card writing

I am always late with my cards and every year it gets easier as the boys join in. It was a great way for the Mr. 9 to practise his Spanish – this year I noticed that his spelling has an Aussie tinge to it. For the little one an opportunity to practise writing and he was proud to be able to write something in the cards.

4.    Singing Christmas carols

In the weeks leading up to Christmas we have participated in several carolling events – always fun to have a singalong with a hundred or so other people.

5.    Christmas performance

This year both boys participated in the school Christmas concert. I have to say I admire the effort and patience of the teachers to get all those kids singing and dancing. The result is this contagious energy that has them singing at home. The little one was thrilled to sing along to his Spanish Christmas song ´Feliz Navidad´

The year has flown by and we have enjoyed sharing our intercultural journey with you. From our home and Nora´s have a wonderful Christmas and we´ll see you in 2017!

Queda poco para la llegada de Santa, Nikolaus, Olentxero o los Reyes Mago. Es curioso como los niños viven esta época del año. Nuestros amigos alemanes ya han encontrado sus zapatos llenos de chuches a principios de Diciembre, los niños australianos están esperando a Santa con ventanas pintadas con nieve artificial, cuando fuera hace 36 grados. Nuestra familia en San Sebastián está esperando a Olentxero y los niños españoles están esperando la llegada de los Reyes Magos el 6 de Enero. La Navidad puede durar un mes si te lo montas bien.

Aquí he eligido mis actividades favoritas para los que tienen niños multiculturales:

1.    Carta a Santa, Olentxero y los Reyes Magos

El año pasado hemos empezado con esta tradición y fue interesante descubrir lo que deseaban. El peque también preparo su carta recortando  imágenes de  publicidad.

2.    Haciendo galletas y dulces de Navidad.

Siguiendo una receta, midiendo los ingredientes y el tiempo juntos para hacer las galletas. Tenía más sentido cuando hacia frío por fuera, ahora la mantequilla y el chocolate se funden con el calor, que hace el proceso aún más interesante.

3.    Escribiendo las cartas de Navidad.

Siempre voy tarde con mis cartas de Navidad, pero cada año voy más rápido con la ayuda de los niños. Este año fue una buena practica para Sr. 'A' escribir en castellano. Para el peque era una oportunidad para practicar escribiendo a sus profes y amigos.

4.    Cantar los villancicos.

En las semanas anteriores hemos cantado unos villancicos por la vecindad. Es siempre divertido cantar en voz alta.

5.    Concierto de fin de año.

Este año los dos niños han participado en el concierto el fin de año. Admiro el esfuerzo y paciencia de los profesores para que todos los niños canten y bailen y el resultado es que los niños cantan en casa también. El peque estaba sorprendido por cantar un villancico en castellano: 'Feliz Navidad, prospero año y felicidad...'

Este año ha volado y nos has encantado compartir nuestro aventuras culturales con vosotros. Desde nuestros hogares, Nora y yo os deseamos felices fiestas. ¡Nos vemos en 2017!
